Established in 1858, Suwannee County is located in north central Florida, just south of Valdosta, GA. The Suwannee River, immortalized by Stephen Foster’s song “Old Folks at Home”, hugs the county’s north, west, and southern borders, giving Suwannee County it’s name. Historically, Suwannee County served as a railroad hub, connecting Jacksonville and Tallahassee with points north of Florida.

The population of under than 45,000 is slowly growing by just under 5% between the 2010 and 2020 census reports. The rural county has a population density of around 50 people per square mile or 20 people/km2. The median age of the population is about 40 years old with median household income approximately $30,000.

Getting into Suwannee County is easy. Transportation options include planes, trains and automobiles. There is a small publicly operated airport (Suwannee County Airport) and several private and community air strips around the county. Railways still travel into and through Suwannee County, while Interstates 10 & 75, as well as US Highways 27, 90 and 129, State Road 51, and plenty of county roads provide access from every direction.
